Thoroughbred Words

Not long ago, in a workplace conversation of which too many details now escape me, I included in a passing sentence the word "asymptotic." Since the conversation was outside the context of first-semester Calculus, a coworker involved in the conversation remarked, "Oooh, asymptotic... Nice word!"

"Thanks," I replied. "It's one of many in my stable of thoroughbred words."

What's a Thoroughbred Word?

A thoroughbred word is a little gem of communication. In the midst of your day in, day out words that form most of our conversations, they are sparkling diamonds that captivate your attention and flesh out a sentence in ways twenty more mundane words can't.

Why a blog?

I mean, any dictionary or thesaurus (particularly the big ones that only libraries and serious writers can really afford) can give you these words. But what dictionary identifies, catalogues, and simply appreciates the really special words? Sure, a thesaurus can give you a list of words that are similar to a run-of-the-mill word that's on your mind, but it can't call them to your attention so you can add them to your verbal arsenal. (Unless you're into reading through Roget's every night. And if you are, I salute you.)

So, this is a place to ruminate on the best the English language has to offer. We want to think on words that will go the distance and finish the race well. They're graceful and powerful, sleek and refined. They're Thoroughbred Words.
